Cave Escape 3D Mac OS
Cave Escape 3D Mac OS
The Standard Roman character set, often called Mac OS Romanor MacRoman, is an 8-bit character set used in older Macintoshoperating systems to display Western characters. It has since beenreplaced by Unicode (UTF-8).
Cave Story (Japanese: 洞窟物語, Hepburn: Dōkutsu Monogatari) is a 2004 Metroidvania platform-adventure game for Microsoft Windows. It was developed over five years by Japanese developer Daisuke 'Pixel' Amaya in his free time. Cave Story features 2D platform mechanics and is reminiscent of the games Amaya played in his youth, such as Metroid and Castlevania (both released in 1986). The original 'The Cave' evolved into the Zork series of both CLI and CGI games. But back to the subject at hand: This 'The Cave' looks very fun. Unfortunately, there is NO DEMO for Mac. Therefore, go over to the developer web page for the game to see it in action. The 3D animation looks nice. It's full of silliness and puzzles.
It is an extension of both US ASCII and earlier Mac OScharacter sets and is identical to ASCII for the first 128 characters. It also resembles the Latin-1 character set, including manyaccented characters and a number of additional symbols, though the twosets don't include all of the same symbols. Latin-1 and Mac OS Roman alsodiffer on the characters assigned to numbers. For example, smallletter 'a' with an acute accent (á) is decimal 225 in Latin-1,but is decimal 135 in Mac OS Roman.
The following table describes the Mac OS Roman character set, associatingthe decimal and hexadecimal equivalents with descriptionsof the characters. Also included are the keystrokes for all printingand a few non-printing characters used with Apple's US Englishkeyboard layout. Not all fonts can represent all characters, whilesome fonts will represent alternate characters.

This game works with: SheepShaver, Basilisk II,
The third and final release in the Escape Velocity series, EV Nova saw the most extensive changes to the game since the original EV. The game started as a fan-made total conversion of EV Override, but Ambrosia Software ended up working with the creators to develop an entirely new game. Matt Burch returned to make significant updates to the old Escape Velocity engine, providing support for 3D ship sprites, dynamic lighting, advanced particle effects, and sophisticated storyline support. The end result is an expansive game with many more races and stories, in a larger galaxy full of different ships, outfits, and weapons.
EV Nova was probably Ambrosia's most cross-platform release of all time. Initially released for 68k/PPC classic Macs, it was soon updated to support PPC Mac OS X and, eventually, Intel Macs. It was also ported to Windows. Because of the numerous versions and supported systems, you should keep these suggestions in mind when picking a version:
- v1.0.2 - v1.0.10 support 68k/PPC architectures
- v1.1.1 supports PPC/Intel architectures
- v1.0.2 supports Mac OS 8.1 and up. Effectively, even though later versions contain 68k code, this is the last one that can run on 68k systems because of the OS constraint.
- Versions above v1.0.2 through v1.0.10 support classic Mac OS 8.5 and up; they should also run in PPC Mac OS X.
- v1.1.1 is the latest and only supports PPC/Intel Mac OS X.
- v1.0.10 is the latest Windows release and has been included for archival purposes.
It's worth noting that EV Nova continued Escape Velocity's success well into the early 2000's, and with the Windows port, it picked up an even larger following. Due to its popularity, there have been numerous EV-like clones since Nova's release, including very recent ones like Endless Sky and Naev (links on Steam if you prefer: Endless Sky - Naev).
