The Economic Impact of Pro All-Star Games on the Host Cities and their Businesses

By Marc Jenkins

When it comes to American professional sports’ All-Star Games fans, players, journalists and business owners all wait in anticipation for the glorified exhibition contests to leave a lasting impression on them in some shape, form or fashion. These impressions could vary depending on from what perspective it is looked at; if you are fan the simple enjoyment from the game could be all that you’re hoping for. If you are journalist such as myself then you want something impressive to take place so you’re column, article or piece will practically write itself due to the excitement. If you are a player then you hope you are selected by the fans or coaches in order to have the honor of participating in the event. Finally if you are a business owner you are simply hoping that your city or a city close to that of which your business is located so that you can enjoy a substantial economic boost via the fans, players and journalists who flock to be a part of the All-Star experience.

With the 84th edition of the Major League Baseball All-Star Game approaching rapidly I felt it was the ideal time to write an article here on Ocoos.com that solely explained the economic impact that hosting a professional All-Star Game has on the host city as well as the neighboring cities and towns surrounding it. Not only do the local business owners in the host cities have the actual game itself to look forward to receiving an economic boost from but also the events surrounding the games which usually last the span of a few days which means more time spent for visitors and more money being spent by these visitors.

Were you aware of exactly what the economic impact of the MLB’s Midsummer Classic is? According to Forbes.com the MLB All-Star Week Brand is valued at $78 million and is ranked 10th on their list of most valuable worldwide sports brands. That is quite an impressive total for just a three-day schedule of events so just imagine how many local businesses in the host cities and surrounding cities benefit directly from that.

Each and every year approximately 50,000 people flock to the host city to witness either the All-Star Game itself, the Home Run Derby, one of the other events which take place during the three days or a combination of them all. Same thing with the NBA and their game, Slam Dunk Contest, Three-Point Shootout as well as other events which take place during what is known as NBA All-Star Weekend. All of these visitors need room and board during their stay along with food and beverages at the very least. Now factor in that these visitors will likely spend money on things other than the necessities being that they are on vacation; one that will probably be a once in a lifetime thing for most which means the spending frenzy will be at an all-time high or at least a yearly high for them. Every aspect of business in a host city receives a boost due to an All-Star Game. Hotels, restaurants, clothing stores, tourist attractions, of course hot night life spots and even street vendors all profit from the leagues deciding to bring their superstar laden exhibition to their city.

Here is a breakdown of what the MLB All-Star Game means to the cities which have had the pleasure of hosting them over the past decade:

Estimated economic impact for the 2013 MLB All-Star Game at CitiField (home of the New York Mets) in New York, NY is $191 million.

As you can clearly see the bigger the market which the city is in the more economic impact the game and everything surrounding has however even in the smaller markets/cities such as Kansas City and Pittsburgh there is still a boat-load of money to be made for the local businesses in those areas as well.

Here is a breakdown of what the NBA All-Star Game does for the host cities which have welcomed the event over the past decade:

*Income for 2010 All-Star Game was much higher than others due to the attendance number which was 44,735 (Game held at Football Stadium instead of traditional basketball arena).

As you can see from the chart above the NBA has a sense of loyalty to certain cities and geographical markets based on the reappearances of the game in such a short span of time. Both the cities of Los Angeles, CA and Houston, TX were awarded the event twice in just a decade’s time. In fact the state of Texas was awarded three games since 2004 and the Association’s star-studded gala has just crossed east of the Mississippi River just once in that span.

Unfortunately for the cities who host the NFL and NHL annual all-star events they don’t get to reap the benefits quite as much as the ones chosen to welcome the MLB and NBA star exhibitions.

The NFL’s version of an All-Star which is called the AFC-NFC Pro Bowl typically just has one host city which is Honolulu, Hawaii. The Pro Bowl has been held at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu every year since 1980 with the exception of 2010 when it was held at SunLife Stadium in Miami, Florida in conjunction with the Super Bowl that season. The Pro Bowl has been knocked for several years now that the players don’t compete at a high level which diminishes the want to attend the game for fans which in turns hurts how much economic impact that the city of Honolulu receives on a yearly basis.

According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority in 2009 (before the Pro Bowl took off to Florida for a year) the game generated $28.6 million for the host city. When it returned to Honolulu the game brought back $28.15 million with it in 2011 and $25.3 million in 2012. Considering the HTA pays just $4 million for the rights to host the Pro Bowl it’s not a bad investment overall. The NFL generates their home run income for the Super Bowl which is generally in the realms of upwards to $450 million per year for the host city.

The NHL moves their host city locations around similar to the NBA and MLB however the league’s popularity itself is nowhere near the other two and that causes their annual All-Star Game and events surrounding it not to command the dollar amounts that the other do. Since 2008 the NHL All-Star Game has produced an economic impact on its host city in the range of $20 million - $30 million per year with the exceptions of 2010 and 2013. In 2010 there wasn’t a game due to the change in the NHL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement and the participation of the league’s players in the Winter Olympics. This past season the All-Star Game was cancelled due to the league’s prolonged owner imposed lockout.

As you can see if you are a business owner you will clearly reap the benefits of having a professional All-Star Game venture to your town. So if I were you I’d find out if my city or a city close to mine is in the final running to be granted the opportunity to host one of the three which travel from year-to-year. If so then you should make it your business for your business to do everything in your power to ensure that the event comes to or near you. Gather your fellow local business owners, spend a little money and show that league that your city would be the ideal location for their game. It could be the difference between you turning a modest profit or making in a three-day span what you’re generally make in a physical quarter or even year.
